Echternach (Luxembourgish: Iechternach or Eechternoach) is a commune with town status in the canton of Echternach, which is part of the Grevenmacher district, in eastern Luxembourg. Echternach lies near the border with Germany, and is the oldest town in Luxembourg. His population in 2021 is 5,650 inhabitants. He grew up around the Abbey, founded in 698 by Willibrord, an Anglo-Saxon monk who became the first bishop of Utrecht and set about christianizing the Frisians. The Werschrummschlüff Hills, with its rock formations, are located west of the city.
