The Biópio Dam was completed in 1956 on the course of the Catumbela River, in the Benguela Province, at an elevation of 109 m (357.61 ft) above sea level, and was inaugurated on September 6 of the same year with the name of the Portuguese military and politician Francisco Higino Craveiro Lopes. It is 20 m (65.62 ft) high and 178.5 m (5,856.30 ft) long in a linear gravity structure, in concrete, consisting of seven discharge blocks equipped with hydraulically controlled automatic tilting gates. The dam underwent a rehabilitation process starting in 2009.
