Orşova
is a municipality in Mehedinți County,
Banat. It is located on the
banks of the Iron Gates I
reservoir on the Danube, at
the mouth of the Cerna
River. In the 2011 census, its population was 10,441 inhabitants. As a result
of the construction of the reservoir, the city was flooded in 1970, and the
population was relocated to a completely new city built between 1966 and 1971
on the southern slopes of the Almăj Mountains. In the
2nd century AD the Romans built the Dierna fort there.
