Lake Coatepeque (Nahuatl language: Cōātepēc, 'at the snake hill'), of volcanic origin, is located in the Santa Ana Department, northwest of El Salvador. It is at an altitude of 745 m (2,444 ft) above the sea level, and its surface is 25.3 km² (9.76 sq mi). Its maximum depth is 115 m (377 ft). It has an island called Teopan. The caldera was formed as a result of a series of explosive eruptions that occurred between 57,000-72,000 BC. Then scoria cones and lava flows formed in the western part of the caldera and six lava domes. The formation of the most recent dome began around 8,000 BC.
