Sorø is a town, capital of Region Zealand (Danish: Sjælland) on the island of Zealand in east Denmark. The population in 2022 was 7,999. It is located in an area with forests, on the shores of Sorø Lake. The name comes from Sor Ø ('Sor Island'), as the original Benedictine abbey, founded in 1142, was located in the middle of a marshy, lacustrine terrain.
