The
first meteorological predictions in Japan were made in 1884, and on July 1,
1956 the Japan
Meteorological Agency (気象庁) was created, based in Minato (Tokyo), charged
with gathering and providing results for the public that are obtained from data
based on daily scientific observation and research into natural phenomena in
the fields of meteorology, hydrology, seismology and volcanology, among other
related scientific fields. On July 14, 1977, the first Geostationary
Meteorological Satellite of the Himawari series
(ひまわり),
which is the one depicted on the stamp, was launched into orbit.
