The
1,000-hectare Nosy Antafana Marine Park on the northeast coast of the Indian
Ocean is made up of three islets: Nosy Antafana, Nosy Rangontsy and Nosy Hely.
It is part of the Mananara-Nord
National Park, established in 1989 and declared a Biosphere Reserve by
UNESCO in 1990. The Nosy Antafana Islands have become a major tourist
attraction for their beaches, coral reefs, mangroves and rock formations, but
also for its important colony of bats. However, they face a growing
deterioration of the corals and their clandestine extraction.
