The
Smolyan Lakes (Bulgarian: Смолянските езера) are located in the Bukova
Mountains, Western Rhodopes,
north of the Orpheus Rocks
and Snezhanka Peak.
They are scattered along the left slope of the Cherna River valley to the town
of Smolyan. They were formed
by a large landslide that occurred as a result of contact between rhyolitic rocks and
water-resistant sedimentary rocks located below them. In the past there were
more than twenty lakes, but now there are only 8 left, the others today are
swamps.
