The
Port of Hong Kong (Chinese: 香港港口), located by the South China Sea, is a deepwater
seaport dominated by trade in containerized manufactured products, and to a
lesser extent raw materials and passengers. It is one of the busiest ports in
the world, in all categories of shipping movements, cargo handled and
passengers carried. In 1841, after the arrival of a British Royal Navy ship,
the colonization of Hong Kong began, and ten years later the port received the
name of Victoria,
in honor of the queen. In 1997 the United Kingdom ceded sovereignty of Hong
Kong to the People's Republic of China.
