Ascension is an isolated volcanic island located in the South Atlantic Ocean. It is about 1,600 km (1,000 mi) from the coast of Africa and 2,300 km (1,400 mi) from the coast of Brazil. It was formed by the eruption of an underwater volcano about a million years ago. Its area is 88 km2 (34 sq mi) and its highest elevation is 859 m (2,818 ft). The first European to see the island was the Portuguese navigator of Galician origin João da Nova on May 21, 1501, Ascension Day, and he named it Ilha da Ascensão; the first organized settlements did not take place until 1815, when the British used it as a garrison. The volcanic formations seen on the stamp are located in the north of the island.
