The CARIFTA was organized on May 1, 1968, to provide a continued economic linkage between the English-speaking countries of the Caribbean. The 12 countries that made up the Association were: Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, British Honduras (now Belize, which joined in May 1971), Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Christopher-Nevis-Anguilla, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago. The Association's Secretariat was based in Georgetown (Guyana). The CARIFTA was officially dissolved on May 1, 1974, and its members were integrated into the Caribbean Community (CARICOM or CC).
