From the end of the 18th century Burundi was a Tutsi kingdom of feudal character. After several incursions by European explorers and missionaries, in 1894, despite internal resistance, the country became an integrated colony in German East Africa. After the First World War, the territory passed into the power of Belgium, which in 1922 established the Ruanda-Urundi colony until the Kingdom of Burundi declared its independence on July 1, 1962. King Mwambutsa IV (Mwami Mwambutsa), ethnic Tutsi, then established a constitutional monarchy, abolished by a military coup on November 28, 1966 and the proclamation of a one-party dictatorial republic. Between 1993 and 2005 the country suffered a bloody civil war between Tutsis and Hutus, which was characterized by terrible massacres.
