Located
in the municipality of the same name, north of the province of Camagüey, the Sierra
de Cubitas constitutes an orographic group with a predominance of karst
topography, where numerous caverns are located, some of which keep ancient
Indo-Cuban cave paintings created by a community Aboriginal of agro-potters
that spread throughout Cuba from the 6th century. The place has been declared a
local monument. The area, also made up of savannas, occupies an area of 559 km2
(216 sq mi), with maximum elevations of 330 m (1,083 ft) above sea level.
