The Federation of Ethiopia and Eritrea (former Italian colony and placed under British Military Administration in April 1941) was established in September 15, 1952 and lasted until November 14, 1962, when the Ethiopian government made Eritrea a province of the country. Protests against the government of Ethiopia broke out immediately and there was a series of continuous conflicts between the two countries, which in 1983 turned into open warfare. On May 24, 1993 the independence of Eritrea was recognized internationally. However, this did not prevent subsequent territorial conflicts and a new war with Ethiopia between 1997 and 2000. Meanwhile, after some years of serious social and economic problems, the Emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie I, who had accumulated an immense personal fortune abroad, was deposed on September 12, 1974 and deprived of liberty until his death on August 27, 1975. After various political changes, on August 21, 1995 Ethiopia became a Federal Republic.
