The European Danube Commission, made up of seven countries bordering the river, was established in Belgrade by the Danube River Conference, in 1948. It replaced previous commissions: the first European Danube Commission was established by the Treaty of Paris in 1856, which ended the Crimean War. Currently (2020) it has eleven member states (Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Moldova, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia and Ukraine) and others with observer status (Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, France, Georgia, Greece, Montenegro, the Netherlands, North Macedonia and Turkey). It is based in Budapest and its official languages are French, German and Russian. The objective of the Commission is to jointly regulate maritime transport on the Danube.
