Cuba
is an island located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. It has
an area of 109,884 km2 (42,426 sq mi) and in 2019 its population was 11,193,470
inhabitants. Its capital is Havana (La Habana). In addition to the main island
(Cuba), several archipelagos belong to the country, with more than 4,000
islands and keys, among which the Isla de la Juventud
(formerly Isla de Pinos) stands out, of 2,419 km2 (934 sq mi) and about 86,500
population. The highest mountain on the island of Cuba is Pico Turquino, at 1,974
m (6,476 ft), in the Sierra
Maestra mountain range.
The island was populated since ancient times by the Guanahatabey, Siboney and Taíno ethnic groups
(according to the description of Bartolomé de
las Casas). The first European to arrive in Cuba was Christopher Columbus
(who named it Isla Juana) on October 27, 1492, and from 1513 the island
was administered by Spain, who turned it into overseas territory and kept it
until after the Spanish-American
war, when by the Treaty of Paris
of December 10, 1898 it was under the control of the United States, until on
May 20, 1902 the independent Republic of Cuba was established.
