The so-called Gesta Gloriosa de Constanza, Maimón and Estero Hondo of June 14 and 20, 1959, was an expedition made up of 198 men, Dominicans in exile and a group of foreigners, of different ideologies, who supported the Dominican Liberation Movement with the interest in ending the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. On June 14, 1959, several armed men commanded by Enrique Jiménez Moya landed at the small Constanza airport. Days later, on June 20, another 144 men, led by José Horacio Rodríguez, disembarked on Maimón beach (near Puerto Plata). After several days of fighting against the regime, the expedition members were defeated, detained and tortured. Some survived, but then most were shot. That same year, a left-wing political group called the June 14 Movement was formed in the country, made up of young people seeking a change towards the democratization of the country. Trujillo was assassinated on May 30, 1961, and his regime was overthrown.
