Oil palm is one of the main agricultural products of the Congo, and the most exploited since colonial times, especially by the Compagnie française du Haut et du Bas Congo, which received a concession of 75,000 km2 of land. Since the proclamation of independence (1960), new oil bottling and margarine and soap production plants were opened, regulated by the Régie nationale des palmeraies du Congo (RNPC), which remained in operation until the first half of the 1990s, when the economic crisis led to the devaluation of the CFA franc and the bankruptcy of Sangha Palm, the main public company in the sector (created in 1983), which led to the abandonment of the plantations. The crisis was not overcome until August 2015 with the opening of the Eco Oil Energy factory.
