The 25th International Congress of Geography, convened by the French National Committee for Geography and the International Geographical Union, was held from August 27 to 31, 1984 at the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris, and was attended by 2,248 congressmen and more than 500 guests and visitors from 85 countries. After the congress, from 1 to 8 September, eight excursions were organized in which many of the participants toured the alpine space. The first International Congress of Geography was held in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1871.
