La
Mare à Poule d'Eau (correct name of the place) is a pond located in the
volcanic caldera that forms the natural Cirque de Salazie, northeast of Reunion
Island. The first settlement that was established in that place was that of a
French colonist, who settled there with two slaves in 1810, and from then on
other settlers arrived and populated the area. On February 10, 1929, a cyclone
destroyed this first settlement, which was abandoned. Currently it is a place
of attraction for fishermen.
The Piton d’Anchain (or d’Anchaing) is a 1,356 m (4,449 ft) mountain of the Piton des Neiges massif, that rises in at center of the Cirque de Salazie. It is partially integrated into the Reunion National Park.
