The Royal Society, formally
The Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge, is a learned
society and the United Kingdom's national academy of sciences founded on November 28, 1660. An expedition (Funafuti
Coral Reef Boring Expedition of the Royal Society) under Professor William Sollas,
on the HMS Penguin, under the command of Captain Arthur Mostyn Field,
carried out drilling on the coral reef at Funafuti in 1896, 1897 and 1898. The
surveys carried out by the Penguin resulted in the preparation of the Admiralty
Nautical Chart 2983 for the islands.
Funafuti is an atoll and the capital of the island nation of Tuvalu. It has a population of 6,320 people (2017 census), making it the most populous atoll in the country. It consists of a narrow stretch of land between 20 and 400 m (66 and 1312 ft) wide, surrounding a large lagoon (Te Namo) 18 km (11 mi) long and 14 km (9 mi) wide. The average depth of the Funafuti lagoon is 36.5 m (120 ft).
