North Velebit National Park (Croatian: Nacionalni park Sjeverni Velebit), established on June 9, 1999 (formerly a nature reserve), covers 109 km2 (42 square miles) in the northern part of the Velebit Mountains (part of the Dinaric Alps), the largest mountain range in Croatia. Its highest elevation is Veliki Zavižan, at 1,676 m (5,498 ft), where the highest weather station in Croatia is located. Within the park there are two exclusive nature reserves, Hajdučki and Rožanski kukovi, and Lukina jama, one of the deepest caves in the world, discovered in 1999. There is also the Velebit Botanical Garden, founded by professor of pharmacology and botanist Fran Kušan in 1967 and, in the extreme south, the Štirovača special forest vegetation reserve.
