On
April 2, 1924, the Portuguese aviators José Manuel Sarmento de
Beires (1892-1974) and António
Jacinto da Silva Brito Pais (1884-1934), left Vila Nova de Milfontes, at
the mouth of the Mira river. After a very convulsive
journey, they reached the outskirts of the Chinese city of Guangzhou on June 23, after
traveling 16,380 kilometers with several stopovers and using two planes, the Pátria
and the Pátria II. His feat, however, was silenced after the
proclamation of Estado
Novo in Portugal after the military coup of May 28, 1926, which both pilots
opposed. On December 20, 1999, a few months after the issuance of these stamps, the
Portuguese colony of Macao came under the sovereignty of the People's Republic
of China.
