The
Rara (Nepali: राराताल) is the largest and deepest
freshwater lake in Nepal. It is located in the Rara National Park,
in the Himalayas, on the border of the Jumla and Mugu districts, in the
northwest of the country, at an altitude of 2,990 m (9,810 ft) above sea level.
Its surface area is 10.8 km2 (4.2 sq mi) and its maximum depth is 167 m (548
ft). The Níjar River feeds the lake, which empties into the Karnali River, one of
the main tributaries of the Ganges.
In September 2007, the lake and adjacent areas were protected by the Ramsar Convention.
There are more than 250 species of birds and many mammals in the area,
including the Asian
black bear (Ursus thibetanus) and the red panda (Ailurus
fulgens).
