Devil's
Peak (Afrikaans: Duiwelspiek) is part of the mountainous backdrop to Cape Town. Its height is
1,087 m (3,566 ft). At its feet, on the coast, Jan van Riebeeck
founded in 1652 the first settlement of present-day Cape Town for the Dutch East India
Company. Some of the first Cape farms were established on the slopes of
Devil's Peak, along the Liesbeek
River. In 1829 the South African
College was founded at his feet, which in 1918 officially became the
University of Cape Town (UCT), one of the most prestigious in Africa.
