On
April 14, 1811, the Republic of Paraguay proclaimed its independence from the
Spanish Viceroyalty
of the Río de la Plata. Paraguay refused to join the United
Provinces of the Río de la Plata (and its successor political entity, the Argentine
Confederation), and chose to administer itself as a sovereign state.
