The Lohmühle or Vianden dam is located in Our, near the town of Vianden, in north-eastern Luxembourg. It is 130 m (426.5 ft) long and 30 m (98.5 ft) high, and forms a reservoir that is 8 km (4.97 mi) long containing 10 million m³ of water (of which 6.9 million m³ are usable). The dam was built for a hydroelectric power station. 280 m (918.6 ft) higher than the great reservoir, are two more reservoirs, with a usable storage capacity of 3 and 3.8 million m³ respectively. Since the Our is the border river between Luxembourg and Germany, an international treaty between Luxembourg and the state of Rhineland-Palatinate was required for the construction of the dam, signed on July 10, 1958. Construction of the dam began in August 1959, the first nine generator sets were installed between 1962 and 1964; in 1976 the plant was expanded with a tenth unit, and with another in 2014.
