Saxon
Switzerland is located in the current German Free State of Saxony, near its capital,
Dresden. Since 1990 it is a national
park (Nationalpark Sächsische Schweiz) covering two separate areas
of 93.5 km² (36.1 sq mi) in the heart of the German part of the Elbe Sandstone
Mountains. Its landscape is of cracked and rocky canyons. The highest peak
in the Park is 556 m (1,814 ft) above sea level. The National Park borders the Bohemian Switzerland
National Park (Czech: České Švýcarsko), in the Czech Republic.
