Chiapas, officially the Free and Sovereign State of Chiapas (Estado Libre y Soberano de Chiapas), is one of the thirty-one states that, along with Mexico City, make up Mexico. It was founded on September 14, 1824. It is divided into 124 municipalities and its capital and most populated city is Tuxtla Gutiérrez. It is located in the southwestern region of the country, bordering on the north with Tabasco, on the east and southeast with the Guatemalan departments of Petén, Quiché, Huehuetenango and San Marcos, on the south with the Pacific Ocean, on the west with Oaxaca and on the northwest with Veracruz. Its population, in 2020, was 5,543,828 inhabitants. Until its annexation to Mexico, it was integrated into the Captaincy General of Guatemala (Capitanía General de Guatemala). In Chiapas, the Tseltal, Tsotsil, Ch´ol, Tojol-ab´al, Zoque, Chuj, Kanjobal, Mam, Jacalteco, Mocho, Cakchiquel and Lacandón (Carebbean Maya) peoples survive, that is, 12 of the 62 officially recognized indigenous peoples in Mexico.
