The Kozjak Dam (Macedonian: Козјак), with its hydroelectric power station, is located in the lower reaches of the Treska River and creates the Kozjak artificial lake. The 130 m (430 ft) dam is the highest in the country. It is in the western part of the country, 45 km (28 mi) southwest of Skopje. It was designed by Chinese engineers, its construction officially started on August 31, 1994 and ended in December 2003. The main purpose of the dam is flood control, but it also serves for power generation. The lake is the largest in the country: it occupies an area of 13.5 km2 (5.21 sq mi), its length is 32 km (19.88 mi), its maximum width is 400 m (1,312 ft) and its maximum depth is about 135 m (443 ft).
