The
construction of the Tavera dam, started in 1969 by the American company Emkai,
was inaugurated on February 27, 1973, and became the first large reservoir
built in the Dominican Republic. It is located in the municipality of Jánico. The waters of the Yaque del Norte
River have been dammed in the town of Tavera and in El Bao, in Sabana Iglesia, whose
dam was inaugurated in 1983. This large infrastructure is used for irrigation,
electricity generation and the supply of water for the aqueducts of Santiago
and Moca.
It is the main source of water supply for agricultural production in the
municipalities of Navarrete, Villa González and the towns of the Northwest
line, through the two main irrigation channels.
