The
construction of the Ferrocarril del Sureste (Southeastern Railway) between
Mexico City and the Yucatán was
carried out in several stages. The history of this railway line dates back to
1904 and 1905, when the engineer Pedro González made the first reconnaissance
studies to draw a line that would join some points in the Mexican southeast.
However, it was not until 1935 that work began, which was very laborious due to
the geography of the territory and the expropriation of some land. On May 29,
1950, the first track (738 km, 458 mi) was inaugurated, connecting Coatzacoalcos with Campeche, but the work
continued until 1970. In 1977, the Ferrocarriles del Sureste came under the
command of the federal government and were renamed Ferrocarriles
Unidos del Sureste (United Southeastern Railways).
