The
Humber Bridge, near Kingston
upon Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England, is a 2.22 km (7,300 ft; 1.38
mi) single-span road suspension bridge, which opened to traffic on June 24,
1981. Construction work had begun on July 27, 1972. Its width is 28.5 m (94
ft), and its height is 155.5 m (510 ft). The bridge spans the Humber (an estuary formed by
the rivers Trent and Ouse), between Barton-upon-Humber
on the south bank and Hessle
on the north bank, connecting the East Riding of Yorkshire with North
Lincolnshire. The bridge was designed by Freeman Fox &
Partners. The total cost of the work, including interest, was £151,000,000.
