Berchtesgaden National Park (in German, Nationalpark Berchtesgaden) is in the southern tip of Germany, in the Free State of Bavaria, and borders Austria. It was established on August 1, 1978 to protect the landscapes of the Berchtesgaden Alps, and was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1990. The park covers an area of 208 km² (80.31 sq mi). In the center of the park is a large lake, the Königssee; a smaller lake, the Obersee, is located above the Königssee and drains into it. West of the lake is the massif of Watzmann (2,713 m, 8,901 ft, represented on the stamp), and beyond that, separated by the Wimbachtal valley, the massif of Hochkalter (2,606.9 m, 8,553 ft). The Watzmann Glacier, located below the eastern face of the Watzmann, and the Blaueis, adjacent to the Hochkalter, are two of the five glaciers in Germany.
