Taal Volcano (in Tagalog: Bulkang Taal) is a large caldera filled by Taal Lake located in the province of Batangas, Luzon Island. It is the second-most active volcano in the Philippines. The caldera was formed by prehistoric eruptions between 140,000 and 5,380 BC. Between 1572 and 2020 there were some 50 eruptions, the largest of which, in 1754, lasted from May 15 to December 12; one of the most devastating, on January 27, 1911, caused several earthquakes that alerted even the city of Manila, 60 km (37 mi) away, and caused the death of some 1,100 people. The 1965 eruption was classified as phreatomagmatic, generated by the interaction of magma with the Taal Lake water, and produced a violent explosion that devastated several villages on the shores of lake and killed about 100 people.
