The Commonwealth of Nations, generally known simply as the Commonwealth, is a political association of 54 member states, nearly all of which used to be territories of the British Empire. The chief institutions of the organisation are the Commonwealth Secretariat, which focuses on intergovernmental aspects, and the Commonwealth Foundation, which focuses on non-governmental relations between member states. It was originally created as the British Commonwealth of Nations through the Balfour Declaration at the 1926 Imperial Conference, and formalised by the United Kingdom through the Statute of Westminster in 1931. The current Commonwealth of Nations was formally constituted by the London Declaration in 1949, which modernised the community and established the member states as "free and equal". Its Headquarters are in London. The Head of the Commonwealth is currently Queen Elizabeth II; the 2018 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting appointed Charles, Prince of Wales to be her designated successor of her, although the position is not hereditary.

The Falkland Islands (claimed by Argentina as Islas Malvinas) is an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean on the Patagonian Shelf. The principal islands are about 483 km (300 mi) east of South America's southern Patagonian coast and about 1,210 km (752 mi) from the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. The archipelago's area is 12,000 km2 (4,700 sq mi). The islands were discovered by Richard Hawkins (from whom they received their first name) in 1594. They are under British rule since January 3, 1833.

Thomas Boutflower (Newcastle, 1732 - Ottery St Mary, Devon, 1775) was an English surveyor and  carpenter. In August 1765 he was appointed purser in the sloop Carcass, which formed part of the flotilla commanded by Captain John McBride which sailed to establish a settlement in the Falklands. It arrived at Port Egmont in January 1766. While in the Falklands prepared a map (A Draught of Falklands Islands) showing West Falkland described as the "Brittish Island" and East as "French Island", the latter very much smaller than the former. His lack of information show in the distorted coastal outlines beyond the northern coast of West Falkland and in the archaic orientation, placing south at the top. The Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Dias (Algarve, ca. 1450 - at sea, May 29, 1500) was the first European explorer to round the southern tip of Africa in early 1488, reaching the Indian Ocean from the Atlantic. His expedition, made up of two caravels (São Cristóvão and São Pantaleão) and a supply ship, left Lisbon in late July or early August 1487, and in late December reached a place near the mouth of the Orange River. After several incidents, sailing out to sea, on February 3, 1488 he reached today’s Mossel Bay, and On March 12, continuing east, the expedition reached its furthest point in the Indian Ocean, the mouth of the Bushman River, but the crew refused to go any further. On their return to Portugal they discovered Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point of the continent, and Cape das Tormentas, which the Portuguese king, John II, named Cabo da Boa Esperança (Cape of Good Hope) because it was the place where opened the rout to reach to India. Bartolomé Dias died on May 29, 1500 on a subsequent voyage when the ship in which he was sailing was sunk near the Cape in the middle of a storm.

Henricus Martellus Germanus (Nuremberg? Ca. 1440 - ?) was a German geographer and cartographer, named Heinrich Hammer, who lived and worked in Florence from 1480 to 1496. Between 1489 and 1491 he produced at least one map of the world showing novel adaptations of the model existing Ptolemaic, opening a passage to southern Africa and creating a huge new peninsula east of the Golden Chersonese (Malaysia). It is possibly based on maps created around 1485 in Lisbon by Bartholomew Columbus.

Bermuda is an archipelago in the North Atlantic made up of 181 islands, with a total area of 53.2 km2 (20.5 sq mi) and an estimated population of 72,000 people. It is named after the Spanish navigator Juan de Bermúdez, who discovered the islands, which had no indigenous population, in 1505. Bermuda became a British crown colony in 1609 and an autonomous colony in 1620, when the first Parliament. Some years later, African slaves were brought there. At the beginning of the 18th century, a lucrative salt trade began on the islands, which became the basis of the local economy. Bermuda's history has been very tumultuous from the 18th century to the mid-20th century, when tourism was promoted and the first regular flights with the United States were established by seaplanes. In the 1970s there were civil unrest and the first demands for independence, which were rejected in a referendum held in 1995. Bermuda is currently an overseas territory of the United Kingdom, and the executive power is in the hands of the British Crown. The link with the United States, however, is very close.
