The Cairngorms (Scottish Gaelic: Am Monadh Ruadh) are a mountain range in the eastern Scottish Highlands closely associated with the mountain Cairn Gorm. The Cairngorms became part of Scotland's second national park (the Cairngorms National Park) on September 1, 2003. The Cairngorms consists of high plateaux at about 1000-1200 m above sea level, above which domed summits (the eroded stumps of once much higher mountains) rise to around 1300 m. Many of the summits have tors, free-standing rock outcrops that stand on top of the boulder-strewn landscape. The Cairngorms formed 40 million years before the last ice age, when a slight uplift raised an eroded peneplain based on an exposed granite pluto.

With a total area of 1,834 km2 (708 sq mi), it is the largest of Austria's seven national parks, as well as the largest nature reserve in the Alps. It is divided into a central zone of 1,198 km2 (463 sq mi) that includes the Großglockner (3,798 m; 12,461 ft) and Großvenediger (3,666 m; 12,028 ft) massifs, with a complete prohibition of agricultural use, and a marginal zone of 638 km2 (246 sq mi) used for agriculture. Five special natural sanctuaries are protected from any human disturbance. The park was established with a 1971 declaration signed by the participating states, but only in 1981 the first parts around Großglockner and Hochschober in Carinthia were put under protection. The adjacent area in Salzburg followed two years later, and the Tyrol finally joined in 1992. It is the largest island in the Indonesian territory, as well as the sixth-largest island in the world at 473,481 km2 (182,812 sq mi). The Indian Ocean borders the west, northwest, and southwest coasts of Sumatra, with the island chain of Simeulue, Nias, Mentawai, and Enggano off the western coast. In the northeast, the narrow Strait of Malacca separates the island from the Malay Peninsula. In the southeast, the Sunda Strait, containing the Krakatoa Archipelago, separates Sumatra from Java. The northern tip of island borders the Andaman Islands, while off the southeastern coast lie the islands of Bangka and Belitung, Karimata Strait and the Java Sea. The Bukit Barisan mountains, which contain several active volcanoes, form the backbone of the island, while the northeastern area contains large plains and lowlands with swamps, mangrove forest and complex river systems. The equator crosses the island at its centre in West Sumatra and Riau provinces. The population of Sumatra, in 2020, was 58,557,211 inhabitants.

The kultjapi (kulkapi or kacapi, better known as hasapi) is a two-stringed lute from the Batak people in Sumatra. The Cahora Bassa dam is located in western Mozambique. It is one of the two main dams on the Zambezi River (the other is Kariba). It was built between 1969 and 1974, when Mozambique was still a Portuguese colony. This dam is used to convert energy from the Zambezi River into electricity by spinning turbines. That energy is then sent to cities, farms and mines in South Africa. The dam forms Lake Cahora Bassa. This dam is the largest hydroelectric plant in southern Africa and the most efficient power generation plant in Mozambique: it is 171 m (561 ft) high by 303 m (994 ft) wide at the ridge. The length of the lake is about 250 km (160 mi) and its width, 38 km (24 mi), and it floods an area of 2,700 km2 (1,000 sq mi); its average depth of 20.9 m (69 ft). The Cahora Bassa system is the largest hydroelectric scheme in Southern Africa with the power plant containing five 415 megawatt (557,000 hp) turbines.

The Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley) or Ischigualasto Provincial Park is located in the northeast of the Argentine province of San Juan and borders the province of La Rioja to the north. Its altitude with respect to sea level varies between 1,200 m (3,940 ft) and 1,800 m (5,900 ft). It is an area of 2,754 km2 (1,063 sq mi), of great scientific importance, since it protects an important paleontological reserve. It is the only place in the world where the entire Triassic period can be seen uncovered and perfectly differentiated in a complete and orderly manner. The geological formations at this site are estimated to be between 200 and 250 million years old. The place is characterized by having little vegetation and the most varied range of colors in its soils. Being a preserved place (declared a Natural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, on November 29, 2000), visits are restricted and can only be done guided. Due to the large deposits rich in fossils in the Ischigualasto area, this place has attracted the interest of geologists and paleontologists since the 1930s. One of the most important pieces found in the area is the Eoraptor lunensis, a very primitive dinosaur discovered in 1991.

The Rhine Falls (German: Rheinfall) is the most powerful waterfall in Europe. The falls are located on the High Rhine on the border between the cantons of Schaffhausen and Zürich, next to the town of Schaffhausen in northern Switzerland, near the German border. They are 150 metres (490 ft) wide and 23 metres (75 ft) high. In the winter months, the average water flow is 250 m3/s (8,800 cu ft/s), while in the summer, the average water flow is 600 m3/s (21,000 cu ft/s). The highest flow ever measured was 1,250 m3/s (44,000 cu ft/s) in 1965; and the lowest, 95 m3/s (3,400 cu ft/s) in 1921. The Rhine Falls were formed in the last ice age, approximately 14,000 to 17,000 years ago, by erosion-resistant rocks narrowing the riverbed.

Its highest peak is the Vaganski vrh at 1,757 m (5,764 ft). The important characteristic of Velebit is its simple and solid form, rigid cliffs and the nakedness of the sea side. The basic geological feature of mountains is karst; flora and fauna are abundant. Velebit as a whole is a natural park, divided into two national parks: Paklenica and Sjeverni Velebit (North Velebit).

The Ébrié (or Ahizi) lagoon is a complex of long and narrow brackish water lagoons located in the south of the Ivory Coast, separated for almost its entire length from the Atlantic Ocean by a narrow coastal strip. Its area is approximately 560 km² (216 sq mi), with a length (east-west direction) of 130 km (80 mi), a maximum width of 7 km (4 mi), an average depth of 5 m (16 ft), a maximum depth of 20 m (66 ft). At its eastern end it is connected by a canal to the Aghien and Potou lagoons, into which the river Mé flows. At the western end it is linked by the Asagni Canal to the Tagba lagoon and the Bandama river. The rivers Komoé and Agnéby flow into it, among others. The lagoon is connected to the Gulf of Guinea, in the Atlantic, by the Vridi Canal, navigable since 1950.

Marshal Philippe Pétain (1856-1951) had a very prominent role during WWI and later held important public positions. He was a puppet head of state of the Vichy regime (1940-1944), in France occupied by Nazi Germany, and maintained a collaborative policy with the Nazis, which at the end of the WWII led to his degradation and death sentence, which was later commuted for life imprisonment.

It is the centerpiece of Triglav National Park, Slovenia's only national park, and the preeminent symbol of the Slovenian nation.

In April 1941, following the attack of the Axis powers on Yugoslavia and the consequent total occupation of its territory, the German Reich applied the old principle of international law of debellatio and completely annexed the northern half of Slovenia, which became integrated in the Reichsgau of Carinthia (Kärnten, in German); the south of present-day Slovenia came under Italian jurisdiction. ABKHAZIA

ABKHAZIA / АԥСНЫ.

Simplified map illustrated by the stripes of the Abkhazia flag, and arms.
(Fake stamps printed by a foreign firm in 1994.)
Face value: 300 M(?).
Not other data.
Not in official catalogs.

Abkhazia (Abkhazian: Аԥсны; Russian: Абхазия) is a segregated state of Georgia and recognized only by Russia, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Nauru and Syria. For the United Nations, it lies within the internationally recognized borders of Georgia, thus constituting the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia. It is located between the Caucasus Mountains and the shores of the Black Sea, and unilaterally declared its independence from Georgia on July 23, 1992 as the Republic of Abkhazia (Аԥсны Аҳәынҭқарра). On August 28, 2008, the Parliament of Georgia declared Abkhazia a Russian-occupied territory, a position reflected by most United Nations member states. Its area is 8,665 km2 (3,346 sq mi) and its estimated population in 2018 was 245,250 inhabitants. Its capital is Sukhumi. The Republic of Abhazia issued postage stamps between 1993 and 2010, and later from 2018; however, these stamps are not recognized by the Universal Postal Union. In addition to the official issues of the Republic of Abkhazia, some international firms have printed stamps, such as the one reproduced here, which should be considered speculative and fake.
